According to East Asian legend, there exists an invisible red string of fate, which ties together people who are destined to be lovers – a concept that is very similar to the Western one of soulmates. 'String Theory' is a coming of age, LGBTQIA+ drama steeped in magical realism that follows Hanna, who can see everyone’s red strings but doesn’t have one herself. As she navigates through this uncertainty in her life, we explore themes of loneliness, friendship, and being open to discovering and accepting ones identity, all centred around aromanticism.
The cinematography style for 'String Theory' focused heavily on naturalism, using the camera as more of a tool to show and display reality rather than one to stylise the image; because of this we chose to use handheld motion in the short film to create the idea that the camera is part of this world, we also focused on lush colours in the background to bring forward and enhance the action in the foreground.
